Isthimar: QE2 to Become Dubai Hotel, Largely As-Is
Istithmar World, the state-owned company in Dubai that purchased the former Cunard liner Queen Elizabeth 2 several years ago, announced that the ship will become a hotel and as originally planned, but without the ambitious redesign they had originally proposed.
The owners stated that those interested in the ship would rather see it as it looked while in service instead of a modernized recreation. Rumors had previously circulated that the ship’s iconic funnel would be replaced with a stylized glass facsimile containing luxury suites, among other radical changes.
Dubai plans to convert cruise liner QE2 into dockside hotel fitted with original furnishings
The QE2 plays an important role in the 1998 film The Parent Trap, starring Lindsay Lohan, Natasha Richardson and Dennis Quaid. Quaid and Richardson initially fall in love during a cruise on the iconic liner, but divorce after having twin daughters; at the end of the film they are shown remarrying, once more aboard the QE2 with their daughters as bridesmaids.
