Oranje Completed in 1938, the Oranje immediately managed to embarrass her owners by refusing to slide down the ways when christened by HM Queen Wilhelmina. Everyone had gone home before the 656-foot-long ship decided to allow herself to be launched later that night. In 1941, she was requisitioned as a hospital ship and run by the Royal Australian Navy. She was returned to her owners in 1946 with high praise. Her postwar refit, which was completed in stages until 1949, left her with accommodation for 950 in two classes (it had been 717 in four classes previously). She sailed in company with the Willem Ruys and the Johan Van Oldenbarnevelt under the Royal Dutch Mail banner, the marketing name used by Nederland Line and Royal Rotterdam Lloyd for their joint Round-the-World service. In 1962, she was honoured by hosting a cruise for the wedding of Queen Juliana. She was sold to Flotta Lauro in 1964 and became the Angelina Lauro. Like the Achille Lauro she suffered a major fire during her refit. She was placed on the Australian immigrant trade with accommodation for about 1,600 in three classes. In 1972 the immigrant contract went to Chandris, and the Angelina was again reworked, this time for 800 in cruising mode.In 1979, she caught fire while docked at St. Thomas and sank whilst being towed to the scrappers.
