Swedish
American Line
For some 60 years, the Swedish American Line (or Svenska
Amerika Linien) operated ships across the Atlantic. Like many other state
lines, their last years were spent solely operating cruises. At least
two SAL ships are still in operation for other lines.

Stockholm
The Stockholm of 1948 is best known for
her role in the sinking of the Ialian liner Andrea Doria near
Nantucket on 25 July, 1956. It is a testimony to her icebreaking
strength that she survived the collision. She continued cruising
with SAL for several years, then was sold to East German interests
and renamed Volkerfruendschaft. |

| n the early 1990's she was purchased by Italian
interests -- kind of ironic given her ignominy as the "killer"
of the pride of the Italian fleet some thirty years earlier. She was
gutted down to her strength deck and given new engines and superstructure,
and thus is totally unrecognisable. She cruised the Caribbean for
various operators, first as the Italia Prima, then the Valtur
Prima, then the Caribe. Because she visited Cuba, she was
not permitted in the United States. Today she is the Athena,
chartered to a German tour company.

Kungsholm
The other Swedish ship still sailing is the Kungsholm
of 1966, which is today known as the Mona Lisa, also operating
with a German tour company. In between, she operated for P&O
as their Sea Princess and later Victoria. You
can read more her on the P&O page of
this site.
